The Romance Cycle: Parts 1 & 2

Adapted & Directed by Charles Newell
Based on Shakespeare's Cymbeline and Pericles

Mar 28, 2003 — Jun 01, 2003

“…much to delight in … hugely moving and entertaining … Newell is unquestionably one of the most audacious, free-thinking directors now on the scene, and one whose beautiful minimalist aesthetic feeds the imagination… a lovely paired escapade.” -Sun-Times

The Romance Cycle is Court Theatre’s playful and joyous new look at Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and Pericles. Charlie’s adaptation will present a truly provocative and thrilling staging of two of Shakespeare’s rarely produced late romances. The production is comprised of two full-length Shakespeare plays, each filled with outrageous humor, high adventure, incredible plot twists and romance. The works share a cast, a single production concept and are be designed to be seen together on the same day.

To present this very special event we’ve completely re-imagined the look and feel of Court Theatre’s intimate, 251-seat space and redefined the boundaries of the theatrical experience. In fact, we’re inviting the audience to check their shoes at the door and to enjoy Shakespeare in stocking feet or slippers. Finally, complementing this unique, 2-part theatrical event, patrons are encouraged to purchase a Greek buffet dinner from Artopolis Bakery, Café and Agora between Parts 1 and 2. Patrons may dine in their seat, at café tables in the lobby, on a picnic blanket on the stage or outdoors (weather permitting) during the interval.
