Exciting news! JoAnne Akalaitis – former Artist-in-Residence at Court, University of Chicago alumnus, and founder of Mabou Mines – was recently featured in SDC Journal. SDC Journal is the official publication of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), the union representing professional directors and choreographers in the United States.

This Spring/Summer 2024 issue features an exclusive conversation between Akalaitis and Senior Artistic Consultant Charles Newell, longtime friends and artistic collaborators.

In this interview, Charlie and JoAnne reflect on her storied career, her history with Court Theatre, the crucial role of the audience, and where the industry is headed today. Check out the interview here!

“I keep looking around the corner for the next thing to do where that is where the arts will matter. I’ve always believed in the great joy of making art and making theatre art. And in how much you give to people.”

Akalaitis was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2023 and has had an indelible impact on the national theatre landscape and our work at Court, having directed The Iphigenia Cycle, Life’s a Dream, In the Penal Colony, Mary Stuart, Phèdre, Quartet, and Thyestes. Join us in celebrating JoAnne and her impressive body of work!
