“Some of the early commissions that we did, or produced with others, were because we realized we had not only an opportunity, but an obligation to bring those stories forward in a theatrical expression.”

– Charlie Newell

During his thirty year tenure, Charlie has directed over sixty productions at Court Theatre, including (but not limited to): Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; The Gospel at Colonus, co-directed with Mark J.P. Hood; The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, co-directed with Associate Artistic Director Gabrielle Randle-Bent; An Iliad; Oedipus Rex; the world premiere of The Adventures of Augie March; and many more.

The Office of the Provost at the University of Chicago is currently conducting a comprehensive search for Court Theatre’s next Artistic Director. Check out our blog, join our email newsletter, and follow our social channels to be the first to hear the exciting announcement!
