A Midsummer Night’s Dream
by William Shakespeare
Adapted and Directed by László Marton
Jan 15, 1999 — Feb 21, 1999
“Court Theatre’s presentation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is an excellent example of theater at its best, drawing the audience into a mystic place that entertains and bewitches while leading us to ponder deeper truths about the capricious power of a nature we still only dimly understand, and the importance of love in sustaining mere mortals.” -NWI Times
“Marton, a director of sensitivity and intelligence, clearly has an affection for the work… this ‘fierce vexation’ of a ‘Dream’ was indeed a pleasure” -Chicago Tribune
This “Dream” is derived from a production that László Marton staged at Budapest’s Vigszinhaz Theatre, where it ran for seven years. Marton emphasizes the dark and sensual side of Shakespeare’s fairies, mortals and mechanicals and the conflict between love and desire, masculine and feminine, truth and fantasy. Equally ambitious, the revival highlights class and gender distinctions, explores the various manifestations of sexual love and celebrates a multiculturalism that’s implicit in the play’s diverse groups and social levels.
