“a piece, an imaginative work that is faithful to Chekhov… Newell mixes the fast-shifting elements of comedy and pathos with a sure hand, guiding his actors to incisive portrayals” -Chicago Tribune
The American premiere of Trevor Griffiths’ tribute to Anton Chekhov’s style of comic tragedy. Using themes and characters from Chekhov’s works, Piano is a poignant look at the painful recognition of one’s own mediocrity. A series of alternately amusing and heartbreaking love triangles are at the center of this piece, questioning the boundaries of both fidelity and social class. While a middle-class protagonist is in the throes of mid-life crisis and despair, it is the servants and peasants who ultimately remind us that “Everything’s possible.”
In Rotating Repertory with Twelfth Night.
