Sophocles (c. 496 BCE—died 406 BCE), with Aeschylus and Euripides, is one of classical Athens’s three great tragic playwrights. While Sophocles wrote over 120 plays, only seven have survived in their complete forms: Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus (which served as the inspiration for Lee Breuer and Bob Telson’s The Gospel at Colonus, staged at Court in 2023). Sophocles and his work have inspired artists for centuries and shaped modern understandings of theatrical conventions.
