COURT THEATRE AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
Court
Theatre is a not-for-profit, professional, regional theatre in residence
on the campus of the University of Chicago. As such, the theatre enjoys
a unique relationship with the University. Court Theatre has an Advisory
Board of 34 trustees and is also overseen by the University of Chicago.
The theatre is supported by the Court Theatre Fund, a not-for-profit
501(c)(3) cultural organization. The University of Chicago provides
about 7% of the theatre's $2.7 million annual operating budget, and
Court Theatre's Board of Trustees and staff are responsible for earning
the other $2.5 million.
Court's Board of Trustees' responsibilities include: fundraising,
setting policy, approving the strategic direction and plans of the
theatre, approving and regularly monitoring the theatre's annual budget
and advocating for Court Theatre in the community. As a department
of the University of Chicago, however, final fiduciary and legal responsibility
and authority for Court Theatre rests with the University of Chicago's
Board of Trustees and administration.
Court Theatre's primary performance facility, the intimate, 251-seat
Abelson Auditorium, is owned and maintained by the University of Chicago;
all Court Theatre staff members and guest artists are employees of
the University. |
